Student Attendance Policy
Article 1 General
1. The City University of Macau has full commitment to teaching and learning excellence and the Student Attendance Policy is targeting to encourage active participation and engagement in academic activities and enhance students’ educational experience
2. This Policy is applicable to all students enrolled on their programme of study at pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Article 2 Responsibilities and Requirements
1. Students must:
- Attend all timetabled activities set for all credit bearing modules associated with their degree programme on a face-to-face basis including those occur off-campus
- In no case attend aforesaid timetabled activities online unless due to force majeure but application accompanied by full evidence should be made to the Registry through the faculty with approval granted in advance
- Register their own attendance using the facility/system provided at all time before the commencement of any timetabled activities
- Be aware that punctuality and completion of timetabled activities are essential for which late arrival or early departure for ≥ 30 minutes (or < 30 minutes for three times) will be regarded as absent for one full session
- Review their attendance records regularly and notify the academic staff responsible if discrepancy is found
2. Academic staff members:
- Have the obligation to communicate clearly with the students about the timetabled activities and stress the importance of attendance and the consequences of absence
- Should regularly review attendance records and provide appropriate reminder to students concerned from time to time especially when any absence was identified
- Must report to the faculty about the students who might become at risk of fulfilling the required attendance rate and steps should be taken to engage them in a discussion regarding the potential impact on their studies either face-to-face, by email or other means of communication. If a student experiences on-going or longer term difficulties that would not be able achieve the required attendance rate, s/he should be advised to apply for suspension of studies
- Are encouraged to incorporate formative assessment to the credit bearing modules to encourage students’ engagement.
- Have no right to make adjustment or amendment to student attendance record without valid justification and accompanied evidence
3. If there is suspected fraudulent use of the attendance recording system by any of the stakeholders, investigation will be carried out by the Registry that could subject to University’s disciplinary procedure
Article 3 Consequence of Unsatisfactory Attendance
1. Students must ensure that for each credit bearing module, the attendance rate must achieve 70% and above or otherwise ones will be disqualified from taking any remaining assessment and the grade for the module(s) concerned will be automatically marked as “T” (fail due to insufficient attendance). Students must then retake the module at the next available opportunity in order to gain the credits
2. Students who have any repeated module grade marked as “T” during or following the retake period will be suspended for one academic year
3. In the case of further absence (i.e. attendance rate not achieving 70% and above) for any module following the suspension penalty will lead to termination of studies
Article 4 Data Processing
1. Students’ attendance data and absence records should be handled securely and the sharing should be limited to necessary parties for supporting student success
Article 5 Right of Appeal
1. Students may appeal against attendance related penalty by submitting a request in writing to the Registry, but only under mitigating circumstances with full evidence will be considered
